Mythology

One of the foundations of man's spiritual voyages lies shrouded in mist and hyperbole. From the ancient egyptians and greeks, to the celts, the vikings, and native americans, mythology has played an integral part in religious study. The books reviewed in this section offer a glimpse into the foundation of our current spiritual quest.

We tried to ask Mulder and Scully if they had a list of books they felt would be of interest to the public at large. They declined comment. So, our own version of the lone gunmen (less computer-minded but still as nerdy) compiled their own list. They have been reviewed in this section. Please don't tell the guys i called them nerdy. Shamanism

From the books reviewed in this section, one can surmise that shamanism is concerned with the healing of the soul from an "astral world" point of view. That's a part of it. That's not the whole of it. Then again, the whole of it is as diverse as the people who practice it. Read on and discover for yourself the role shamanism plays in your life.

THE HEALER'S MANUAL
TED ANDREWS
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1997. 234P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95. ISBN: 0-87542-007-9

This book is just full of useful ways a person can learn to heal him/herself. In no way does Andrews attempt to say that the methods provided should replace conventional healing, i.e. doctors. However, he does make it known that there is a lot an individual can do to help prevent dependency upon doctors. All it takes is a few minutes a day to use any of the methods provided in this book. If you a person can be trained to take a vitamin, brush their teeth, and exercise on a regular basis, then he/she can train themselves to run the bodies meridians. Sure healing is hard work, but if maintaining positive health was easy, nobody would need this book. Besides, we can all use new ways of improving ourselves. The variety of healing exercises provided by Andrews will help to do just that. Working from a basis that uses all five of our primary senses, Andrews provides the reader with a plethora of healing ideas that range from the colors a person wears to the sounds a person hears. Everything needed to help maintain balanced energies is right at our fingertips. Andrews merely shows us how to start balancing ourselves in between visits to the doctor. This is a wonderful book full of easy-to-use exercises that will benefit anyone. Especially those of us who wait until we're practically at death's door before we decide to seek a doctor's assistance. Preventative maintenance.....something everybody needs to learn. This book can be a wonderful guide in that direction.

SENSOUS LIVING
NANCY CONGER
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1996 201P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95. ISBN: 1-56718-160-0

This book offers a marvelous look at our five major senses and the interactive roles they play between ourselves and the world around us. There is also a chapter devoted to those senses that we tend to gloss over, such as balance, solar sense, magnetic sense and others. The author gives exercises to help get us back in touch with pieces of ourselves that we take for granted. She also offers ways to improve our sight, taste, smell, etc. everything we need to be sensuous individuals lies in our perception of the senses. this book can show how to tap into them in a more fulfilling way than that to which we have become accustomed. While I was reading this book, I found myself making periodic stops in order to attune myself to my sensory perceptions. smelling my food while my eyes were closed became a game at each meal. Warranted some very odd looks from my lifemate, but it helped me gain a better appreciation for my olfactory. This book is a delight. Treat yourself to a new relationship with your senses. You're worth it.

PASSION
BARBARA DEANGELIS
DELACORTE PRESS. NEW YORK NY 1998 95P
HARDCOVER. $14.95 ISBN: 0-385-31435-3

Written as a series of small essays, this book focuses on the one underlying emotion that governs everything we do: passion. Not saying that it is greater than love, but it definitely needs to be recognized in order to get the most out of love. Think of it this way. Call to mind someone you know whose enthusiasm for any particular area (i.e. theater, teaching, sports, etc.) knows no bounds. You watch this person when he or she is involved in this one activity. They seem to lose all sense of the world around them and remain focused on this activity. "What drives them?" You might say. OR, "I wish i had their type of commitment to something." Well, the driving force behind them is passion. You already have the ability for passion. All you need to do is unlock it. This book can help. Dr. De Angelis draws on her expertise as a lecturer in the field of human relations and conveys the messages of passion and warmth with clarity. She does not badger or cajole the reader. She allows the reader to move at his/her pace, knowing that, as individuals everyone approaches life differently. What she is offering is a chance for anyone dissatisfied with the apparent lack of success in their lives to embrace their responsibilities for improvement. Then she offers examples of what can happen when passion is re-awakened in our lives. I liked the way Dr. De Angelis added affirmations at the end of each essay. I copied some of these into my personal journal so i can remind myself of their wisdom when i feel that i am not living at my optimum levels. Passion is not just about the physical aspects of life. Passion pervades all areas from work to play. It is a vital part of making life enjoyable. The only limits to its ability to work for us are the ones we enforce upon ourselves. Let Dr. De Angelis' book help you break free of the vice grip you may have on your passion. See the world through new eyes and welcome passion back into your life.

FREEDOM FROM THE TIES THAT BIND
GUY FINLEY
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1999 202p.
SOFTCOVER. $11.95 ISBN: 0-87542-217-9

Basically this book is 202 pages of repitition of the following idea: we are all responsible for the highs and lows of our own lives. Granted, Mr. Finley has found numerous ways to make that statement, but boil all of them down and what is left is the aforementioned idea. In essence, we hold the keys to our happiness as well as our unhappiness. Period. Mr. Finley offers 11 approaches to this notion; all of which are designed to help us view life from a more positive visual field. The premise of each approach is for the reader to spend more time with their emotions and less time with their thoughts. Mr. Finley deftly points out that most of our troubles come from thinking too much about a situation instead of just allowing things to follow their natural courses. While we "use our heads" we tend to think ourselves out of situations that could be beneficial in exchange for ones that keep us in our confortable little ruts. All in all, the book is easy to read. The exercises are more demanding on the emotions than the physical avenue of living. According to Mr. Finley, it's our emotional selves that are in the more dire need of being untangled.

From colds and coughs to the removal of warts. The wonderful thing about all of the recipes in this book is that the ingredients can be found in your own back yard. Discover that dandelions are good for more than just annoying the person who mows the lawn. Rabbits aren't the only creatures to benefit from the ingestion of clover. Catnip isn't just for adding a little "zip" to the kitties. Flowers, trees, and even weeds can be used to benefit our lives in one fashion or another. Some of the many ways can be found within the pages of this wonderful book. Drawing on her 25 years of work with herbs (she has a master herbalist degree from dominion herbal college), Ms. Williams has furnished the public with a well-organized and insightful encyclopedia of herbal lore and remedies. Quick to point out that these remedies are not to take the place of medical care, she nonetheless confirms the restorative, rejuvenating, and relaxing roles herbs can play in our lives. This truly is a remarkable guide to the many uses of herbs. If you are only curious about herbs or have been using them as part of your daily regimen for years, i recommend grabbing this book as soon as you can. It will fit on your shelves beside the first aid kit. At least it does in my house.

When planning your next vacation, wouldn't it be nice if you could avoid all the hassle of buying tickets for an airplane? WIth the help of this book you can do just that. This book was designed to show the many benefits to astral travel. It also conveys some of the more common misconceptions surrounding astral projection. Yes there are precautions to be taken. This is standard procedure in any work pertaining to the metaphysical and the mind; but the author shows through exercises and guided images that astral projection does not have to be the stuff of horror movies. If approached with a positive attitude, astral projection can be quite rewarding; and you can even learn to travel without the hassle of boarding passes and lost luggage.
This book is well-written and thoroughly researched. The exercises are accessible to everyone from beginners to those individuals who have been "travelling" for years. The range and depth of the research involved makes this book a valuable tool for the astral traveller. ASTRAL PROJECTION:
THE OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE
DENNING AND PHILLIPS
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1996 239P.
SOFTCOVER. $9.95 ISBN: 0-87542-181-4

This book comes across as a text book, which isn't necessarily bad. However, had the authors chosen to add a small amount of brevity it would have been less dry. Despite the dryness, this is a good book for beginners who are serious about learning to perform astral projection. The exercises appear difficult because they are written in such a heavy and austere manner. There are no humorous anecdotes. Everything is presented "scientifically". I would compare it to learning the elemental chart in a high school chemistry class. Perhaps this was done as a means of deterring individuals for whom astral projection is nothing more than a passing fancy. I do like the formulas they give for cleansing and aligning the chakras. Very practical for many aspects both magickal and non-magickal. Formula one, which involves rhythmic breathing and visualizing a white sphere of light, would benefit anyone who suffers from some form of stress in their lives. All in all, it's an informative and helpful book to have. It just needed a little more humor to make it a bit more palpable.

NAKED SOUL:
ASTRAL TRAVEL AND COSMIC RELATIONSHIPS
MARLENE MARIE DRUHAN
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1998 196P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-247-X

This book alternately annoyed me and impressed me. There were times when i felt that the author was being contradictory with some of her statements. At one point, she related an incident that occurred at a workshop she was conducting. A lady was sharing her first time experience with astral travel. The author, almost scoffingly, passed off the woman's experience as a mere daydream. Several chapters later, the author changed her tone by reminding the reader of the importance of daydreaming. This type of inconsistency at times led me to question the author's validity on the subject at hand. On the other hand, she did impress me with the emphasis she placed on the importance of travelling only when in a positive frame of mind. Like attracts like much more quickly in the astral realms. Travelling while your mind is full of negativity is only asking for trouble from the lower realms. The author also stressed the fact that visiting our past lives is just that: visiting. We can no more effect changes in our past lives than we can the outcome of a storyline in a movie. One thing is for certain, this book reminded me exactly how individualized astral travel truly is. No two people will travel in the same manner nor have the same experiences. Which is a good thing to keep in mind when your instant reaction to someone's stories of astral travel is to tell them their an idiot. The author is by no means an idiot when is comes to astral travel. She may have problems communicating her ideas effectively, but even that doesn't make her an idiot. She just needs a better editor. When all is said and done, this is a good book with some interesting insights to travelling the astral pathways. Pay attention to what she has to say about astral lovers and cosmic companions. The little space she provides for these two subjects just might teach you something. I know I learned a thing or two.

ASTRAL PROJECTION FOR BEGINNERS
EDAIN MCCOY
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1996. 244P.
SOFTCOVER. $7.95 ISBN: 1-56718-625-4

For anyone interested in understanding astral travel, this book is a good starting point. (Probably why the "FOR BEGINNERS" is in the title, no?) The author's approach is full of common sense. She lets the reader know from the start that no two people will travel in the same manner. Ulitmately, the journey is what the traveller makes of it. The reader will find throughout the book many suggestions to facilitate positive astral travel. From creative visualization techniques to chakra exercises, the book contains a variety of methods from which to choose. THere'S Even A Section Pertaining To The Use Of "perception altering" substances. The author, although not a proponent of such useage, respects the choice of the individual to do so. Her main concern is for the reader to not become so attached to a substance that is turns into a crutch. She reiterates the point of responsible travelling throughout the book. All in all, this is a great "jumping off" point for those individuals with a serious desire for healthy, positive astral travels.

ASTRAL TRAVEL FOR BEGINNERS
RICHARD WEBSTER
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1998. 227P.
SOFTCOVER. $9.95 ISBN: 1-56718-796-X

Reading just the title of this book, one could get the impression that there is a major difference between astral projection and astral travel. Having read the book, it appears to me that the difference is merely one of semantics. Both of these concepts have been referred to as "out-of-body experiences". The processes used to induce each of these altered states are the same. First, choose a method of relaxation. Second, choose a way to leave the physical body. Third, get out on the astral plane. Sure, it takes practice, but it really is that simple. If this is the first book that someone picks up to read concerning working with obe's, the choice is a good one. Mr. Webster offers a myriad of methods to ensure that time spent in the astral will be safe and productive. He also offers enough history on the subject so that the reader may understand that obe's have been around for centuries. This is not a subject that some "fly by night" snake oil salesman concocted. There have been enough scientific studies performed concerning obe's to lend it a voice of validity. Throughout the book, Mr. Webster offers glimpses of the studies in order to back up his own views. Definitely a researcher worth his weight in salt. As an added bonus, there is a small chapter concerning "remote viewing" as well as one linking astral travel with numerology. Short as these chapters are, they offer a taste to anyone interested in pursuing those topics further. This is a good book for beginners. the language isn't full of jargon nor is it insulting in its simplicity. Want to travel to ireland but can't afford the airfare? For $9.95, this book will take you there and more. Enjoy.

SYDNEY OMARR'S ASTROLOGICAL REVELATIONS ABOUT YOU
SYDNEY OMARR
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1999. 282P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-504-5

For the most part, astrologers use broad sweeping generalizations in order to convey their messages to the masses. The scientific community may scoff, but astrology has been around for centuries. Originally, it was ear-marked for the pleasure of only royalty and other high-powered individuals. Thank the stars (pun more than intended) for Sydney Omarr. The pre-eminent astrologer has spent more than 50 years bringing his astrological findings to the common man and the rich alike. His latest book is sure to be another hit in his lustrous career. Each chapter takes an in depth look at hidden fears, career choices, character, and potential for love, happiness, and success for each of the 12 signs of the zodiac. One item that i have not seen in other mainstream astrological books is a guide for discovering your "rising sign". Mr. Omarr has placed a really simple one in each zodical profile. Perhaps his method is a little too simple. The chart supplied is broken into 2 hour intervals starting with individuals born between 4:00 and 6:00 AM and circling the clock to completion at 2:00 and 4:00 AM. If the individual knows his birth time, all he needs to do is look for the interval in which it falls and voila he's found his rising sign. Herein lies my only complaint. According to the method provided in this book, my "rising sign" is Capricorn. I have had my chart plotted by no less than 7 individuals with varying expertise in astrology. (I'm a Virgo. I don't get one "second opinion". I gather them.) In each of those 7 instances, my "rising sign" has come up Scorpio. I realize that astrology is not an "exact science", but my Virgoan anal-retentiveness kicked in overdrive with this particular aspect. The chart that Mr.Omarr has provided is too easy. It is more befitting a carnival sideshow than a man of Mr. Omarr's reputation. Despite this one complaint, I enjoyed the book. Defintely glad i have it in my reference library.

MOON WISE
DANIEL PHARR
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 2000. 235P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-521-5

We've all heard about the moon's effects on our emotions. Countless studies have been performed. Charts and graphs have been calculated; data recorded for future posterity. "Old wives tales" have been passed down from generation to generation. Circles have been cast in honor of the giant mass that circles the earth daily. Until now, the information has been surrounded by an aura of vagueness. No one really seemed to have a clear way of seeing through the technical jargon. Thanks be to Daniel Pharr and his book, Moon Wise. With language that is simple, yet non-offensive, he has written a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the fluxes involved with the pulls of the moon.
Mr. Pharr adeptly relates the various signs of the zodiac and how the moon passing through each sign can affect our moods. Need to ferret out minute details of a contract? Read the contract during a Virgo moon. Want to relax and enjoy life for a while? Try the Leo moon. Perhaps you need to address some financial concerns. Taurus moon is the best time for that endeavor. These and many more suggestions can be found within the pages of Moon Wise.
Included in the book are a glossary of terms, a bibliography, and a lunar ephemeris. The ephemeris is a handy guide for quick referencing of the moon's location for enhanced facilitation of its energies.
Helpful little book.

TAROT COMPANION
TRACY PORTER
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 2000. 242P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-574-6

Wonderful little directory of tarot meanings and associations with other forms of divination. Ms. Porter correlates the significance of tarot as it relates to numerology, astrology, the Kaballah, the runes, I Ching and the chakras to name a few. This book is comprehensive to beginners while not insulting to the learned individuals for whom tarot is a way of life. An added bonus for me was the inclusion of tarot spreads that I have not seen anywhere else. Perhaps they are merely variations on some standard spreads, nonetheless, they were a needed spark to alleviate the boredom of some of the "same old" spreads. My only complaint lies with the editorial staff. I realize that not all typos and grammtical errors are going to be found and corrected. A few mistakes here and there are expected. However, when the error is a glaring one and the manuscript goes to copy unchanged, then I get a little testy. Page 41 of this book is the blatant mistake of which I speak. This particular page presents the reader with a copy of the following cards with explanations: the Page of Cups and the Knight of Cups. The information beside each picture is incorrect. What has happened is the paragraphs have been reversed resulting in the information for the Page beside the Knight and vice versa. This being my only complaint, I give Ms. Porter and her book, Tarot Companion, a well deserved round of applause. Definitely a reference book for the tarot enthusiast.

TAROT JOURNEYS
YASMINE GALENORN
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1999. 267P.
SOFTCOVER. $19.95 ISBN: 1-56718-264-X CD INCLUDED

Guided meditations involving the major arcana of the tarot is the premise of this book. Ms. Galenorn succeeds beautifully in conveying her ideas in a manner that leaves the reader feeling closer to the cards than could possibly be imagined. Each meditation is designed so that the individual can meet his/her own archetypes and begin a more personal understanding of himself/herself. Ms. Galenorn helps the reader to see that the archetypes are reflections of his/her inner world. Before the meditation for each card, there is a brief description of what the card symbolizes traditionally and spiritually. There are also a few guidelines for use that can help to facilitate the appropriate atmosphere for contact with the archetypes; i.e. incense, candles, crystals. Keep in mind that the guidelines are not intended to be followed strictly. There is room for individual preferences when using these meditations. The meditations in the book can be used by groups of all sizes. Ms. Galenorn offers suggestions for how they can be incorporated to fit the dynamics of groups containing 3-15 people. They can be performed by solitary practioners, however, it is suggested that the individual read the meditation into a cassette recorder to be played back at the chosen time. All in all this book is highly insightful not only in the use of tarot but also in the joy of meditation. Practicing the exercises provided will help the individual gain new perspectives toward their own inner lives. Areas of strength and weakness can be uncovered so that personal transformation can take place.

MAD ABOUT MEAD:
NECTOR OF THE GODS
PAMELA SPENCE
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1997. 190P.
SOFTCOVER. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-683-1

This book is for novices as well as seasoned mead makers. Using personal experience, wit, and historical background, the author has created an instructional guide that entertains as well as informs. The book begins with a history lesson in meadmaking. This includes historical and mythological uses of milk and honey in all types of rituals from birth to death. Once the history lesson is out of the way, the author transports the reader into the "art and science" of the meadmaking process. The "science" aspect covers everything from starting the yeast to allowing fermentation to take place under the proper conditions. Also included are the many tools for this endeavor. The "art" aspect is easily seen in the various flavors that can be made from the plethora of fruits, herbs, spices, and vegetables that can be used. I was pleasantly surprised by how lively this book was. I've never made mead. This book convinced me that with patience, love of what you are doing, and a good deal of curiousity, meadmaking can be quite rewarding. Even if you only have a passing fancy for mead, read this book. I found it to be more entertaining than some of NBC's "MUST SEE TV".

DANCING WITH DRAGONS
DJ CONWAY
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1997. 296P.
SOFTCOVER. $14.95 ISBN: 1-56718-165-1

Dragons do exist. D.J. Conway proves it with this new book. Drawing on her own personal experiences she tells of the joys and frustrations of working with the powerful and oft misunderstood guardians of secret treasures. This book goes a long way to restoring heretofore terrible public relations between dragons and humans. There is very little in the way of useless information in this book. The first two chapters give information both historical and mythological. This good tactic then leads into the main purpose of the book: working with dragons. The author stresses one main point. In order to work with dragons one must be totally honest with oneself in regards to your reason for contacting dragons. This is not a relationship to be treated as frivolous. I particularly enjoyed the correspondences between dragons and the elements. Being an earth sign, i was interested in the dragons associated with this element. It's nice to know that stubbornness isn't just for humans. My only drawback to the books pertains to the rituals. They are a little too ceremonial for my liking. However, for those who find strict adherence to ceremony enhances the results they seek, then the rituals listed in the book should be helpful.

EARTH POWER:
TECHNIQUES OF NATURAL MAGIC
SCOTT CUNNINGHAM
LLEWELLYN PUBLICATIONS, ST. PAUL, MN. 1994. 153P.
SOFTCOVER. $9.95 ISBN: 0-87542-121-0

One of the best books ever written on the subject of nature magic. But the author is Scott Cunningham, so how could it be bad? Yes, I am biased for this man's work. His is a voice that rings with clarity, precision, and unadulterated honesty. This book not only shows the reader accessible techniques for working with nature, but it also shows methods the reader can use to become a better person. It is written in a manner at once authoritative and alarmingly human. The three sections show an easy to follow progression from the basics (grounding, centering, creating sacred space) to working with the elements. Throughout the book, Scott reiterates the following message: "Magic is the use of the natural forces of nature to bring about needed changes. To perform effective magic three necessities must be present: the need, the emotion, and the knowledge." If these needs are not there, then the magic won't be either. All of the spells presented in this book can be performed as a solitary ritual or as part of a group ritual. The nice thing about this book is the fact that Scott leaves the actual performance entirely up to the individual. If you fell the necessity to put on the full regalia of a ceremonial practioner, then do so. If you wish to keep things simple, that's fine, too. Magic is as individual as the people performing it. This book should be on the shelf of novices as well as individuals who have been involved with magic for a long time. The information provided will benefit anyone regardless of their magical status.

HERB MAGIC
SCOTT CUNNINGHAM
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1994. 46p.
Softcover. $2.99 ISBN: 0-87542-132-6

I must first make a disclaimer. I have a difficult time findimg fault with anything that Scott wrote. The man had insight and personality that can never be duplicated. Plus his style was so friendly, even a hardened sceptic could at least admit ne had a point with his beliefs. Scott was truly a gift from the Deities. Now that I've managed to gush all over his memory, let us move onto the review. This may be a small book in comparison to his later bodies of work, but in no way should the size indicate a lack of information. Designed to be an introduction to the benefits of herb magick, Scott conveys the importance of knowing the herbs with which you wish to work, be they helpful or harmful. The addition of the two spells at the end of the book helps tie the rest of the material together nicely. This is a remarkable little book at a remarkable little price. Interested in learning about herbs and magick but not ready for a large body of work? Pick up this one. It helps cement the idea that "good things come in little packages".

THE MIDDLE PILLAR
ISREAL REGARDIE
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1998. 274p.
Softcover. $14.95 ISBN: 1-56718-140-6

Even if all you have is a passing interest in the Qabala, this book should be on your reading list. When he wrote this in the 1930's, Israel Regaride managed to step beyond his times and treat the world to an understanding of the Qabala on a simplified level. He gets wordy at times, but the superb editing and annotations of the Ciceros helps allay any confusion. Keep in mind, language of today is going to be different from that of the 1930's. I'm just glad the Ciceros worked on making this particular book even more accessible. Relying on the knowledge he gained by having worked with Aleister Crowley, Regardie felt that the information he learned in the Golden Dawn should be passed on to the masses, not subjugated for the use of select individuals. He made some enemies by publishing their "secrets", but he he gained so much more for the sacrifices. This book shows that there should be no division between psychoanalytic thought and magic. In order for any magic to truly work, the practioner must know him/herself. True knowledge of one's self is also necessary in the field of psychoanalysis. And the blender that mixes these two houses of thought: The Qabala. By using such exercises as the Qabalistic Cross and The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, any individual can attain alignment with the universal energies that surround us. It takes practice, hard work, and determination..... but so does life. If you want to make your life a little easier to manage, read this book. Learn the rituals. Practice them daily. You'll like the end results.

CANDLES, MEDITATION AND HEALING
CHARLENE WHITAKER
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 2000. 154p.
Softcover. $7.95 ISBN: 1-56718-818-4

Although I liked the majority of the ideas presented by the author, I found her approach to be a little too confining. For instance, on p.19 of the book, Ms. Whitaker states: "Keep in mind, as I am suggesting things for your altar, that no particular religious belief is being advocated." If this were truly the case, then why does she insist that white light is symbolic of God's light? Why do all of her prayers and invocations begin with the very Christian opening of "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"? In her defense, I will say that once or twice she has referred to white light as "Infinite Light and Energy", thus making her statements a little less one-sided; but not by much. If her intentions were to touch not only Christians with her book, the language she used was no indication of her open-mindedness.
The only safety precautions when working with candles are implied when she mentions the use of "..seven-day candles that are in safety glass..." (p.20) Even so, she feels that it is perfectly fine to allow a candle to be lit at all times on her altar. Having numerous cats as well as birds in my home, this would be impossible for me to do. Not to mention that most candles come with labels stating that open flames (even if they are in glass containers) should not be left unattended. Perhaps my Virgoan sense of propriety is a little "out of whack", but leaving a candle to burn 24-7 is just begging for a visit from the local fire department.
One other thing Ms. Whitaker seems to take for granted is permission to perform healing rituals. Granted she does say that "Your intention is not to manipulate anyone's life." (p.32) What she neglects to mention, however, is that you should always receive permission to perform a ritual for someone else. This may be an area of personal ethics. Perhaps I am aligning myself with the side of caution. Be that as it may, one should at least try to notify the person for whom a candle is to be lit of one's intentions. Trying to send positive energy to someone who is non-receptive defeats the purpose of the ritual.
If you are new to candle burning rituals and just want a few pointers to get you started, this book can do that. Just bear in mind that Ms. Whitaker isn't as open-minded as she would like you to believe. Not that I am against Christianity, or any other religion for that matter. I just feel that if you are going to claim open-mindedness, then the language you use should reflect that viewpoint.

ENCHANTMENT OF THE FAERIE REALM
TED ANDREWS
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 19974 216p.
Softcover. $10.00 ISBN: 0-87542-002-8

This book is pure delight. Simplistic in its approach and light-hearted in the way it is written, Andrews has captured the joy that can be had when communicating with the elementals and Nature spirits. Yes, one should always approach these charming, alluring, and sometimes tempermental beings with caution and respect. Who says respect has to be somber? With the use of myths and fairy tales, Andrews has created exercises that will help anyone to understand and attune to the salamanders (Fire), sylphs (Air), undines (Water), and gnomes (Earth). There are also meditations on how to meet the Kings of each element. Also included in the book are sections on flower faeries, tree spirits, and some of the wonderful creatures of the faerie realm, i.e., dragons, centaurs, unicorns, and mer-folk. This charming book should be in the libraries of everyone interested in the faerie realms and their inhabitants.

LORD OF LIGHT AND SHADOW
DJ CONWAY
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1997. 227P.
Softcover. $14.95 ISBN: 1-56718-177-5

Before beginning a journey, a traveller may wish to plot a route to take. To do this, he may consult a map in order to familiarize himself with the many routes to his destination. Through the use of mythologies and archtypes, Ms. Conway has created a collection of maps that can lead us to the God in all of his forms and aspects. I enjoyed what the book offered. The overall premise was to show that there is more than one God and more than one way to enjoy a relationship with Him. Sure, each mythology views the God differently. That goes without saying. However, they also share similarities which helps promote the idea of universal spirituality. This book is not a cure all. Nor is it a ?quick fix?. It is a compendium of ideas designed to promote contact with the male aspect of Divinity. Showing all the sides of the God helps us to see that communicating with him is not a black/white, cut/dry relationship. It is a total union with the universes inside as well as outside of ourselves. Once we are capable of viewing the God in all of His forms, then we can begin to feel the balance so many of us seek. There are a few times throughout the book when the discussion of Christianty takes on a tone of judgement and intolerance. While I doubt Ms. Conway?s intent was to disparage Christian beliefs, I feel that a cautionary reminder is due. If we ridicule our detractors, we become as narrow-minded as we claim them to be. If we speak of promoting tolerance, the we must live by those standards. On a whole, this book was refreshingly intelligent. The myths used are written in such a way that the similarities are rather apparent. Everything is straight-forward. There are no symbols to decipher. An informative book I would recommend to anyone who believe?s there?s more to the God than what they have been taught.

MAGICK OF THE GODS AND GODDESSES
DJ CONWAY
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1997. 437p.
Softcover. $17.95 ISBN: 1-56718-179-1

This magickal compendium is a wonderful blend of all of the major religions of the world. Part encyclopedia, part historical text, this book promotes the idea that the only difference in the religions is a cultural one. D.J. begins the book with an introduction explaining why she wrote it. She then moves into historical references to the gods and goddesses as a group. After that, the book moves into a brief discussion on how important the act of worship is to humankind. Having made the case that ?In the deepest sense, humankind needs to acknowledge that the basis of all spiritual belief comes from the same source.?, D.J. then propells the book onto task of describiing the beliefs and ideals of the peoples of the world. Included in this wdiscussion are the Egyptians, Romans, and Mayans as well as legends from the Celtic Realms, Finnish-Ugrian Realms and the Orient. Each chapter is concluded with endnotes and a bibliography. Also included in each chapter are glossaries of some of the major Gods/Goddesses pertaining to the chapter?s subject matter. This book is not an ?everything you need to know about the Gods and Goddesses of the world?. It is, however, an overview of the beliefs and practices of the many cultures that make up the diversity of our world. I would recommend any individual interested in ancient cultures and their religious practices that this book should be somewhere in their library. It is well written, well researched, and truly informative.

PATRICIA MONAGHAN
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1998. 398p.
Softcover. $17.95 ISBN: 1-56718-463-4

This book is set up as a perpetual calendar. Each day is a devotional to the Goddess in one of Her many forms. What I like about this book is the use of multiple religious views. Each devotional begins with a chant, peom, or prayer to the Goddess from all over the world. These can easily be used in group situations as well as solitary. There is a little bit of something for everyone. Not only is it helpful in gaining a sense of spirituality in our daily living, it also provides education concerning the multitude of paths that exist in the world of religion. To me this layout is reminiscent of books that I have seen for recovering alcoholics, cancer and AIDS survivors, as well as a few for overall well-being. This book is a wonderful way top engourage spending a few minutes honoring the Great Lady whom is Mother to us all.
This is a good book to own. Go buy it.

THE NEW BOOK OF GODDESSES AND HEROINES
PATRICIA MONAGHAN
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1997. 371p.
Softcover. $19.95 ISBN: 1-56718-465-0

I admire an author who can devote her time to doing the volume of research that went into the making of this book. Patricia Monaghan deserves a thousand kudos (if not more) for having the diligence it must take to present such a large and informative tome to the public. The neatest feature in this book (or at least the one that I narrowed down my list to find) is the section entitled ?Cultures of the Goddess?, wherein the myths are listed via continents. Then to further ease the reader?s searching the myths are further divided into specific locales. Example: AFRICA: African, Egyptian, Arabic, and North African/Carthaginian/Phoenician. Within each of these sublists, there is a brief history of the mythology of the area. Then, with the history out of the way, there is a further breakdown which puts the myths in a geographical listing. Example: PHOENICIAN GODDESS MYTHS: Ba?alat, Bau, Beruth, Mylitta, Ri.
I like this book. I like having a comprehensive guide that includes not only the well known Goddesses and heroines of Greece and Egypt, but also those for whom existence was not known to me. This book should be on a shelf in every home in which the Goddess is an active participant.

AFTER DEATH COMMUNICATION;
FINAL FAREWELL
LOUIS E. LAGRAND
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1997. 219p.
Softcover. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-405-7

This book would be helpful to everyone who has experienced the grief caused by the death of a loved one. The author does not approach the topic from just one point of view. He judisciously displays arguments from the side of science as well as the metaphysical. Using accounts from his many years as a grief counselor ( with permission from those he has counselled), Dr. LaGrand explores such areas as the nine types of contact experience to the skeptic in all of us. Not once in his book does he ridicule anyone about their own beliefs regarding the contact experiences to which they may have been receptive.
Dr. LaGrand begins the book with explanations geared toward de-mythifying contact experiences. He explains that they are much more ordinary than once thought, having occurred throughout history in every culture known to man. He then discusses the nine types of contact experiences which include visual, auditory, touch, smell, and the appearances of small animals and birds. Being a grief counselor, he ends the book with a chpater that gives absic pointers in helping someone deal with a contact experience.
I found the book to be highly informative and objective. Considering Dr. LaGrand has a Ph.D., it was nice to read a book that was not all one-sided and heavy on the jargon.

EDAIN MC COY

This book is so full of useful information that I don?t know how I managed to do rituals before reading it. The historical Backgrounds concerning each of the Sabbats helped me to understand the reasons behind the celebrations. If that wasn?t enough, Ms. McCoy also offers recipes, craft ideas, and mini rituals that can be used along with whatever major ritual you may have in store. I am truly impressed with the body of information that can be found within the pages of this book. Ms. McCoy is to be commended for her time and efforts in bringing such a magnificent volume of ideas to the pagan communitites. I am especially grateful for the networking resources she supplies at the end of the book. Those have been more help than I can possibly convey. If you don?t already own a copy of this book, may I suggest that you BUY ONE AS SOON AS YOU CAN!!!!! It will be of inestimable value for celebrating the Sabbats with flair.

EMBRACING THE MOON
YASMINE GALENORN
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1998. 291p.
Softcover. $14.95 ISBN: 1-56718-304-2

Admittedly, I was rather put out with the title of the book. I had expected, from the title, that the book would be more about moon lore and less like another magickal cookbook. Just goes to further prove the old axiom surrounding the word ?assume?. I definitely made an ?ass? out of myself. This book, while still another tome promoting Wicca and the rituals and spells that help to identify Wiccan beliefs, I found myself learning new things. This was mainly due to the author?s eclectic approach to the study of Wicca. This book does not follow one particular branch of Wicca. Instead, it blends them together in one giant stew pot, thus showing the reader that despite differences in approach, it?s the similarities that tie all the branches together. One isn?t ?better than? another. The book is divided into three parts. It begins with a section on preparing for rituals. This section gives some very good suggestions for creating sacred space and invoking the deities. The second section discusses magickal living. It gives pointers on using such things as candles on a daily basis to help foster our connections to the universal energies. The third section deals mainly with shadow working. The author shows ways of doing this through Goddess/God rituals and working with faerie/animal magick. Despite my earlier displeasure at what I felt was a mis-leading title, I really enjoyed this book. The author?s freshness to an already over-discussed topic was a delight. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for an approach to Wicca that doesn?t feel like it was written from a text book point of view.

CELEBRATING THE CRONE
RUTH GARDNER
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1999. 211p.
Softcover. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-292-5

The content of the book should be obvious from the title. This little book is a wonderful look at the meaning of becoming an old woman or "crone". Full of stories from around the world told by the women who have lived them, this is a celebration of the "golden years" in feminine life.
If you would like to dispel any of the negative ideals behind Western society's belief that growing old makes you less of a person, then read this book. Inside you will find the voices of many women united in acceptance of the wisdom and integrity that has come from seeing the beauty in being old. The rituals, poetry, and stories are all tributes to what it means to leave behind the time of the Maiden and the Mother, and to enter into the time of the Crone. There truly is magic and beauty in this final process of human development.
As a man, I felt a little intimidated by this book at first. After all, this book was written specifically for women. I will never experience menopause. I will never know what it means to have my 'biological clock" slowly stop working. I mean no disrespect to any women. But men just don't understand the women who share our world. However, after reading this book, I have gained an even deeper respect for my mom, her sisters, and women in general. It is about time that people start to recognize the importance of our older generations. Without them, we would have no history to call our own.
This book was a true delight. For anyone who knows of any women who are close to beginning their "Crone" years, give them the gift of love and respect. If they are having difficulties accepting their new life role, then buy them this book. It will help them to see that they aren't alone in this life-changing process. It will also help them see that they still have a lot of life to celebrate and embrace.

Another attempt at how to be perfect based upon the oral tradition of an indigenous group of pacifists. At first glance that statement may cause someone to think that I'm scoffing at the validity of the message behind Kashmir Shaivism. I can honestly say I am not scoffing. Both sides in this little hypothetical argument would be speaking the truth. Both would be correct and incorrect alike. Both sides would be arguing the same point.. Sounds simple, right? Well, the plan is a simple one. It's God that's goofed up the execution of the plan. So sayeth the teachings of Kashmir Shaivism.
I understand the major philosophy behind Shaivism. Lord Siva (God) has created the world in which we live and pretty much the entire universe, too. This same line of patriarchal thinking has been witnessed in Judaisim and Christianity. In my spiritual thinking, the universe and all of its inhabitants come from the same bowl of primordial soup. I just choose to accept the male and female aspects of the energy, rather than one over the other. Doesn't make either line of thinking better than the other; merely two different ways of approaching the same idea.
Honestly, I feel that this book is a marvelous beginning for individuals who wish to live a healthy moral and ethical life. Showing how the myths of the major religions can truly apply to today's society makes them more than stories in a book. My only complaint of the book is the obvious patriarchal overtones. I would say the same thing if the tones had been more matriarchal in its approach. Extremes are not balance. One extreme over another is merely the same pasture from a different side of the field.
Read the book for the codes of living. Any change in your life is a change..

REALITY IS JUST AN ILLUSION
CHUCK COBURN
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1999. 238p.
Softcover. $9.95 ISBN: 1-56718-155-4

This was an interesting little book. Then again, so was The Celestine Prophecy, which this book reminded me of in a vague sort of way. Not quite the ?governmental conspiracy to withhold religious artifacts? that made the Celestine Prophecy so ?thrilling?, but this book did hold up as far as being a chronicle of a quest. The author, along with his wife, have travelled all over the world interviewing shamans. This book is a recollection of some of those journeys. Along the way, the reader is given tidbits of ?enlightenment? that should make delving into the world of psychics a little easier. Also, the reader is reminded that reality as we know it is just that....as we know it. WE can change reality anytime. All we need to do is alter our perception and *voila* a new reality has been created. That?s the simple part. The difficult part lies in the maintaining of our new perception in the face of great opposition; our own falling into patterns of existence. If all of this sounds like you have read it before, you may have. Quite a few of the books that are currently on the market make grand claims of providing ?new? concepts in living a healthy, psychic, spiritually uplifiting life. They all pretty much tell us the same thing: the knowledge of enlightenment lies within ourselves. When we open up to the ?higher good? that is in all of us, then the world as we know it will truly change. This book is just another look at how we can alter our perceptions. It?s also a longer version of those reports we had to write in school, ?What I Did on Summer Vacation?. All in all I liked it. It?s a quick read and the author has a way of ?humanizing? some of the more ?stuffed-shirt? attitudes used by many proctioners of the worlds of clairvoyance.

Softcover. $12.95 ISBN: 1-56718-166-x

Any book in which the author places a Personal Test before going into the guided imagery and meditation exercises is a book that is intended for serious studying. Just the kind of book I like. Ms. Conway starts the book with enough history concerning shamanism to keep the reader interested. No charts. No maps. No boring time lines circa this circa that. THen she shares a little information on Celtic mythology. After that, she issues the challenge: the Personal Test. A cautionary word: BE HONEST when taking the test. Through guided imagery and meditation exercises, the reader will learn how to gain some of the tools necessary for shamanic healing. There are also techniques to aid in working with astral guides, using ogham (Druidic alphabet), and stones for divination. This book will not make the reader a shaman by the time the final pages are read. That will take much more training. What this book will do is offer the serious student some very good stepping stones. I highly recommend this book. Its will benefit both beginners and those individuals who have experience studying shamanism.

My what an interesting little book. If it written with an almost journalistic tone. Part adventure story, part history lesson, the author discusses wvents that transpired while he was in Russia doing research for this book. Combining humour, Western skepticism, and first-hand experience, Johnson takes the reader on a tour of a magical tradition thought to have been wiped out after the 1917 Revolution. The Slavic tradition is alive and well and still being practiced today. It may be hidden within the folds of modern technologies, but the methods it utilizes are much the same. I liked the way that Johnson used several other religious mythologies, (i.e., Hindu, Buddhism,Celtic, and Christian) in comparison with the Slavic beliefs. It was one more way to show that despite differences in approach these are all ways of attaining higher spiritual awareness. There isn?t ONE WAY to reach the higher planes. We all climb the same World Tree, we just travel different branches. If you?ve ever been interested in the Slavic tradition, or even if you?re just a little curious, this book is full of useful and educational information. Magic is a universal language with accents in different areas of existence. Diversity keeps the universal energies from stagnating. THE ONCE UNKNOWN FAMILIAR
TIMOTHY RODERICK
Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN. 1994. 218p.
Softcover. $10.00 ISBN: 0-87542-439-2

Finally, a book that explains the relationship with familiars beyond the stereotypical ?black cat on a broom?. For many of us, this has pretty much been the view on familiars. THey are jsut a pet used by a witch to carry out his/her bidding. However, this book can help change that limited viewpoint. If you?re ready to alter the way you see familiars, strap yourself in and hold onto the bar. Using shamanism as his workfield, Roderick dispels the belief that only witches have relationships with familiars. Through guided imagery and other meditations, anyone can tap into the energies created by a relationship with a familiar. Even though these types of partnerships are extremely personal, they aren?t experiences limited to membership in a secret society. Another misconception Roderick dispels concerns the familiar itself. A familiar can be any animal froma domesticated dog to the mythical unicorn. This shows that the familiar is much more than a pet to do its master?s bidding. The familiar is an energy, either physical or ethereal, that can be tapped into in order to gain an understanding of humanity?s relationship with Nature. This book is a thought-provoking, viewpoint-expanding, intelligent work. Anyone interested in unleashing the powers of familiars into their lives ahould read this book. I appreciated Roderick?s ability to not insult the intelligence of his audience. Although his tone lends to the assumption that the reader has at least a rudimentary experience with familiars, the language he uses is not condescending or sarcastic. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn that there is more to a familiar beyond Hollywood?s concept.
